Rain bugs have been appearing in agriculture fields in the Adilabad district for the last four days. Farmers traditionally believe that the early appearance of rain bugs popular as - ‘Arudra purugulu’- is a sign of good rains to come.
Farmers have pinned much hope on good rains this season so that they get good yields to compensate their earlier crop loss.
On the other hand, agriculture officials have asked the farmers not to go for early swing without good moisture in the soil.
R. TV Prasad of Both mandal headquarters said, early appearance of ‘Arudra Purugu’ (red velvet rain bug) is a sign of good rains as Arudra Purugu and he spotted the rain bugs in his agriculture fields on June 12. He said farmers strongly believe in traditional knowledge systems developed over a period of time.
Srinivas of Kumari village of Neredigonda mandal said people also predict the rains based on the style of a crow holding a stick in his or her mouth as part of collecting sticks to build nests for their safety before the onset of monsoon.
People also believe that appearance of Gurrapu purugulu is also a sign of good rains in the villages.
He said farmers have already started sowing cotton and soya with the existing moisture content in the soil with the rains and added that they had sown cotton in eight acres and soya in six acres. Srinivas expressed happiness over good germination of both the seeds in his agriculture fields.
